Cigarette Litter Prevention

Cigarette butts are the most littered item in America. In addition to being harmful to waterways and wildlife, litter effects our perception of a place and can actually lower property values up to seven percent. We respect the lifestyle choices of individuals on the Main Street Corridor, but must look for solutions to lower the impact of litter and debris.

Keep America Beautiful's Cigarette Litter Prevention Program has allowed us to put more than twenty cigarette litter receptacles at high-traffic areas throughout the Main Street Corridor. By placing these receptacles at bus stops, outside of businesses, and in areas where smokers gather, we have been able to reduce cigarette litter in these areas by 56%.
